Mounting or dismounting pedals is easy. Who hasn’t spent some time finding the meaning of screwing? Who hasn’t finished their gesture in the teeth of the crankset? There few tips to save time and preserve your hands!

The Tools
No expensive or complicated equipment to assemble and disassemble the pedals, all you need is : some grease, an 8 mm Allen wrench (6 mm if you have titanium axles) or a 15 mm pedal wrench. We say pedal wrench, because regular spanners are usually too thick to fit between the pedal body and the crank. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn’t…
Time and difficulty
You will not have for more than 5 minutes for the assembly, and to disassemble count as much if you have the right tools! Nothing complex, you just need to have the right tools and use your strength wisely.
Stage 1
There are two types of « axle shape » pedals, those that have « flats » for a flat wrench and those that have an « cast » for Allen wrenches. So you need to have the right tools to assemble and disassemble the pedals.
Stage 2
In all cases, put grease on the thread. It may be cleaned beforehand. There are special greases for titanium axles to prevent creaking.
Stage 3
We identify the Right (R) and Left (L) pedals. The general shape certainly informs, but in the case of « flat » pedals or Speedplay it is less obvious!
Stage 4
In the case of pedals with clamping « on the crank side », they are screwed in by hand. Here we start with the left which tightens in an anti-clockwise direction.
Stage 5
We tighten with the key in the same direction of course!
Stage 6
The right pedal will tighten clockwise. By hand first…
Stage 7
Locking is clockwise !
In addition to being thin, the other advantages of the pedal wrench are to be solid and to have a large lever arm which avoids being too close to the teeth of the chainring…
Stage 8
To disassemble the right, unscrew counter-clockwise.
Stage 9
And for the left, unscrew clockwise. For dismantling the right, unscrew anti-clockwise.
Stage 10
Pedals with an Allen cast are a little more complicated to set up. We recommend that you stand on the left side of the bike both to put them on and to take them off.
Pedal down, the easiest way is to pass the Allen key through the thread of the crank.
Stage 11
We place the pedal on the key, we hold it perpendicular to the crank and we start tightening. We are on the left, therefore anticlockwise.
Stage 12
We do the same for the other, we screw the right pedal without forcing it in this anticlockwise direction, we have the opposite point of view…
Stage 13
The pedal is then firmly locked with the maximum lever arm of the key.
A tip to get by on the tightening directions (Allen or flat keys). To mount your pedals place your keys towards the front of the bike and press towards the ground. To disassemble them, you will place your keys backwards and press towards the ground.
Stage 14
To disassemble pedals with Allen cast, stand to the left of the bike. On the right side you are sure to test the teeth of the chainring…
The right pedal will disassemble in this direction.
Stage 15
And the left like that.
Do not use a tool with too large a lever arm to assemble the pedals… You have to tighten the pedals hard, but you also have to remember that you will have to dismantle them with « common » tools… And the multi-tool may not be enough!
