Mounting a Shimano crankset is a fairly easy operation if you have the right tools…

The tools

To mount your Shimano Hollowtech II crankset, you will need a cloth, grease, a Shimano crankset compression tool, a 5 mm Allen wrench and a 5 mm torque wrench as well, up to 14 N/m of torque.

Stage 1

We start by applying a film of grease on the axis. Both to protect it from corrosion and to facilitate its insertion into the bearings.

Stage 2

The axis is then put into the right bearing. Press with your hand to plate it as much as possible.

We then make sure that the axis is « out » on the left side.

Stage 4

Before setting up the left crank, we will make sure that the plastic ergot is raised.

If this precaution is not taken, it will be impossible to reassemble the crank. You can look for the cause for a long time and therefore get angry for nothing!

We pull up the left crank. There is a detromper, so there is no risk of desynchronizing it with the right.

Stage 6

The compression cap is fully retscrewed. But with bare hands! The tool has been sized so that it cannot tighten too much.

We will « pinch » the bearings with a mallet. Only one. Never a hammer…

Stage 8

We then tighten with the compression tool. Sometimes we turn around, sometimes nothing…

We start by tightening the screw closest to the frame or internal screw…

Stage 10

Then we tighten the external screw.

We adjust the torque wrench quite high, here 14 N/m.

Stage 12

The internal screw is tightened to the couple.

Then the external one.

We start the tightening again with the internal screw and then the external one. At this point we are sure that it is perfectly assembled. There is nothing complicated to mount a Shimano pedalboard in the end!
