The tools

You will need 2 and 5 mm Allen wrenches, a Torx T25, a thin 15 mm flat key type pedal or hub key to mount and adjust the rear brake. You may need a 13 mm hub wrench for the front. Add a torque wrench to be sure of your tightening.

  • Clé Allen de 5 mm
  • Clé Torx T25
  • Clé à cône de 13 et 14 mm
  • Clé dynamométrique

Temps et difficulté

You have to be meticulous in these operations because your safety depends on it! The constraints are enormous and above all brutal. So we stay focused for an operation that will not last more than 30 minutes! Beware of the lengths of tight axes.

Stage 1

We will first test the bolts provided with the brakes or the frame. There must be at least 5 mm of screws for the assembly to be safe.

Then tighten the bolt and block it. We finish the tightening with the torque wrench.

Stage 3

It is then checked that the caliper does not move when the axis is tight. If this is the case, it is because the axis is « too long »…

It is then necessary to insert a washer that will « extend » the frame and therefore « decrease » the axis.

The notched washer will also participate « in the seat of the brake » on the frame, it also works at the back.

The bolt is carefully chosen to tighten the rear caliper. Sometimes the fixation is short.

To make your life easier, simply lock the screw with the key and turn the caliper. With seatstays connected fairly low, handling the key is a punishment…

When caliper no longer rotates, we put it as vertical as possible and tighten with the key. We finish with the torque wrench of course.

Stage 5

The cable tension barrels are replaced if they are removable…

The quick locking of the brake lever is placed in the « open » position, i.e. outwards of the lever.

Stage 6

The cables are fixed and we look at where the pads are. It must be remembered that they tend to « get up » to braking. Here they are too high, we unscrew them a little.

We arrange for the so that the pad is always maintained. It is then slipped to the right height.

Stage 8

Now that the skates are at the right height, they must be pinched forward. To do this, a wedge is placed towards the back of the pads.

We placed the quick locking in close position. The pads holders are rather tight. We then brake and while we maintain the pressure on the lever, we block the pad holder.

We put a key back when we have both hands free. By holding the pads holder to prevent it from moving.

To center the brake on the rim, you can act on this screw, with a 2 mm Allen key.

By screwing it, we will bring the right pad closer and shift the left.

By unscrewing the screw, the left pad is closer. You have to act on this sparingly, just to adjust 1 mm or 2. No more. If you need more, you have to go with a 13 mm key.

Stage 10

On the differentiated rear calipers, it is mandatory to act with a 15 mm key to center them. If the caliper are double articulation (DPB), we proceed as for the front.

This screw makes it possible to change the tension of the spring and therefore the feeling of the lever.

When you tighten it (green arrow) you gain power, but the effort is greater. By unscrewing it (orange arrow), the lever support is relaxed.

On the differentiated rear brake, the tension screw is located here.

As for the front, we tighten (green arrow) and we have more power and we loosen (orange arrow) to have more flexibility.
